Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive neuromodulation treatment modality that is based on neurostimulation.
Clinical application of tDCS treatment is recommended for depression. Depression is often associated with the under-activation of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), which is located in the frontal lobe of the brain.
tDCS treatment delivers a weak, direct electrical current to specific areas of the brain via electrodes placed on the scalp. This current temporarily modulates the electrical activity in regions under the electrodes, such as the DLPFC, making them more excitable. Gentle and consistent modulation of under-activated brain areas over time supports their reactivation, thereby reducing depressive symptoms with minimal side effects.
