Trauma: emotions and addiction
Our priority at The Kusnacht Practice is to identify and treat the underlying causes of addiction and emotional issues. These factors are often associated with traumatic events in a client’s life.
Trauma can be either ‘big T’ trauma (such as physical, sexual or experiential), or ‘small T’ trauma, which is usually associated with childhood developmental experiences.
These are not typically related to PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) but instead can be almost educational in effect. However, they can impact negatively on a person’s life over many years and can create a lack of self worth and coping strategies, which are injurious to health and wellbeing.
To treat both big T and small T trauma we adopt the same approach.
We tend to think of our memories as images that are played in our head like a movie, but in fact many of them are much more deeply rooted and they affect us on a subconscious level.
The feelings we carry with us from childhood continue to have an enormous impact on our emotional state as adults. The events that caused these feelings may or may not seem obviously traumatic when seen through adult eyes, but nonetheless they can have a lasting effect.
Helping clients with trauma
When an individual has experienced trauma it needs to be processed in a safe and healthy manner in order to lay to rest the emotional issues that are associated with past events.
We use a range of innovative techniques in order to strive to achieve this goal. These techniques may include trauma reduction sessions, during which we help the client to explore and understand the nature of the trauma. For further details please contact us.
