Feeling low? Helpful advice for coping with depression and anxiety

Feeling nervous, stressed or experiencing low moods? In many cases, this may be a natural reaction to a negative experience and it will quickly pass. But if these feelings persist they can become exhausting and may be the result of depression or an anxiety disorder. These are common medical conditions that require treatment from qualified professionals. Thankfully, there are a number of strategies that can help those who may be struggling to cope with problems of this nature.

Recent advice published by the American Psychological Association states that a form of psychotherapy known as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is highly effective for treating anxiety disorders and depression. This involves a therapist helping a client to understand and cope with destructive thought patterns. People with anxiety can be overwhelmed by nervous thoughts and react adversely to unpleasant situations. Depression is meanwhile described as lasting feelings of extreme sadness or despair.

People who suffer from these emotions may also have issues with addiction, trauma, eating disorders, burnout or chronic pain – although this is not automatically the case. The underlying causes of depression and anxiety may include biochemical imbalances, genetic factors and lifestyle issues. For those affected it’s reassuring to know you are not alone.
